IELTS Speaking part 3: Topic HOME

A. CREATING A NICE HOME

Why do some people buy lots of things for their home?

I think home is not only a place to return to at the end of the day, but it also gives people a unique environment that has an effect on their mood. That’s why buying a lot of things and decorating home can be life-enhancing because decorating is about creating the beauty and comfort for the homeowners to enjoy. That is to say, a well-decorated house can both help you get rid of anxiety or stress and set the mood for a productive day.

Do you think it is very expensive to make a home look nice?

I don’t think so. As I’ve mentioned before, a nice house should be a place in which you are supposed to feel most comfortable. So as long as you feel happy with it, home decoration does not mean lots of expensive stuff. And, you know, there are even some tricks to make your house look high-end, but still on a budget. For example, it is a great idea to paint interior doors black, which automatically add a sense of luxury without costing much.

Why don’t some people care about how their home looks?

I’m not sure but I guess actually everyone cares about how their home looks but the point is they don’t have time for it. These days, because people are occupied with heavy workload, there will be not much time left for other activities like recreation or self-improvement, let alone house decoration. Meanwhile, decorating requires much time and effort to pick out the most suitable theme, color or lighting design. So this might be the reason holding many people back from decorating their homes.

B. DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOME:

In what ways is living in a flat/apartment better than living in a house?

The first thing that comes to my mind is security. For me, a home should be a place where you feel completely secure and safe. While living in a flat, you are less likely to face a situation when a burglar breaks into your home because there are CCTV cameras on every corner of your building around the building. Also, it is not easy at all to own a house close to the city center because it might cost a fortune. Meanwhile, a flat seems to be a more affordable option.

Do you think homes will look different in the future?

We must admit that technology is evolving rapidly these days. That’s why I believe that homes in the future will be updated to accommodate new gadgets and advancements. Smart devices and automatic system such as driverless cars or smart screens will be commonplace in the next few decades, I guess. It sounds quite fascinating to me because I consider myself as a tech enthusiast. As I’m totally busy with my work, it would be great to have all the housework done automatically.

Do you agree that the kinds of homes people prefer change as they get older?

Probably. I think when it comes to older age, house location matters the most and this preference will vary from people to people. Some may prefer somewhere which is peaceful and tranquil for them to totally relax on their own. Others may want to live near their family or friends where care and support are available when they are in need. For example, my grandparents do not want to live far away from their grandchildren, so they prefer living with my family and helping with housework if necessary.
