Writing Task 2: Children’s character development (1)

Writing Task 2

One’s character traits are strongly influenced by the place where he or she grew up. Discuss the impacts of an urban environment and those of a rural environment on a child’s character development.

Sample Answer

In recent years, the influence of the living environment on people’s dispositions has been a topic of debate in many parts of the world. While I am convinced that the distinction between urban and rural lives nourishes children’s virtues differently, I believe it is also the root of bad character traits.

The norms and values accepted in the two mentioned areas have positive impacts on a child’s personality development. Firstly, a rural man living in a pleasant and friendly neighborhood from an early age can realize the importance of socializing, supporting, and assistance among fellowmen. In the long run, this consciousness will convert into good personalities, including sociability, enthusiasm, and generosity. Secondly, settling in a fast-paced society, townspeople are likely to be ambitious and determined to deal with the fierce competition. This invisible hand pushes children to possess those good dispositions. Otherwise, they will be less competitive and unemployed.

In other respects, the living environment can shape children’s character traits in detrimental ways through their families. Indeed, urban children are unduly pampered and addicted to electronic devices due to good financial conditions and a lack of socialization. This leads to a pessimistic scenario when children become selfish and self-interested without being adjusted by their parents. Moreover, rural children tend to be unambitious and easily content with their lives because of their specific ultimate living goals. People living in the countryside usually appreciate family solidarity and close-knit relationships instead of material wealth. This parents’ perception influences their children’s minds via educating and raising processes. As a result, children will not be eager to break the comfort zone and readily accept the present.

In conclusion, the influences of living places on the way children develop their dispositions are entirely significant. I believe either rural or urban environments can shape them both negatively and positively.
