Focusing on water use for irrigation, Central Asia has the highest consumption rate, at a hefty 88%. This is closely followed by Africa and Southeast Asia, at 84% and 81%, respectively. South America ranks fourth in this category with 71%, but the remaining two parts of the world – North America and Europe – close the list with 39% and 32%.

Regarding water utilization for industrial purposes, we can see that Europe takes the lead, using just over a half (53%) of its total water for this cause. North America comes a close second with 5% less than the figure for Europe, yet the proportional numbers for the other parts of the world in question are nowhere near as high, not exceeding 12%.

As for domestic water consumption, Central Asia and Southeast Asia utilize the smallest proportion of their water for this reason, at an identical 7% each, which is 2% lower than the rate of Africa. While water for households in the developed parts of the globe, namely Europe and North America, makes up larger proportions than the above three, averaging at 14%, in South America this percentage is the highest at just under a fifth (19%).
