IELTS Speaking Part 2

Describe a person you only met once and want to know more about.

You should say:

  • – Who he/she is
  • – When you met him/her
  • – Why do you want to know more about him/her
  • – And explain how you feel about him/her

Sample Answer 7.5

Today I would like to tell you about a person I have met once and would like to meet again in the future.

Her name is Mina, a French young lady who looks cute in her thirties with a funny and dynamic personality. I first met her when I was studying French in IDECAF in which she was the teacher. After finishing the course with her, I stopped studying there and Mina had to go back to France to pursue her master’s degree.

To be honest, it was a fun time with her because she has great pedagogic methods which combined with her own life experience and stories. Whenever she came in, all that we, the students, were expecting was a new story to be told and a new in-class game to play. Indeed, Mina did a good job not only as a teacher but also as a storyteller.

To be such an excellent teacher, she had traveled a lot and had experienced all kinds of ups and downs in her life. To me, her knowledge is deep like an ocean which I cannot see the bottom of. Thanks to that, besides the French language, whenever I needed some important advice, she would be the first one I came to. I really admire and appreciate her for her knowledge and her experience. She not only helped me improve my French but also supported me well with advice whenever I cope with some personal life’s issues. I think her advice will be useful for me in the future.

That’s all I would like to share with you about Mina. I hope I will be able to fly over to France and meet her again.

 IELTS Speaking Part 3

Where do you think is the right place to meet on a first date?

I think I will choose a casual restaurant or a cozy simple rooftop cafe for my first date because I think the atmosphere there is quite suitable to break the ice with someone. I mean those places create a homey feeling in me and in my dating partner so that we can be more natural when expressing ourselves.

Do you find making friends at school different from other friends?

Yes, I think the friends that we make in class or in the workplace are different from those we make outside of it. In class or workplace, friendships are founded based on collaboration and teamwork for a common objective, which is to pass the exam and gain high scores, so the friendships here are quite practical and short. We tend to stop contacting our classmates after graduation. On the contrary, in life, we choose friends according to the similarity in personalities and passions without personal benefits so the friendships we make outside of schools and workplaces are purer and may last longer.

What are the characteristics of a good friend?

To me there are 3 things that make a good friend: First, it is “trustworthy”. Good friends are honest with us and never talk behind our back and they are outspoken when needed. Instead of flattering us, they sincerely tell us the problem and support us in fixing it. Second, it is “empathetic”. They understand profoundly the pain we are handling. When we feel heartbroken, they will be there and emotionally cheer us up and charge us with courage to keep moving forward no matter what happens. Third, it is “kind-hearted”, which means to have a heart of gold, that person should be kind, generous, forgiving and thoughtful. Everyone has their flaws so a kind hearted friend should be the one that knows and accepts who we are without any judgemental thoughts.

What are the characteristics of a bad friend?

There are 3 things that make a bad friend in my opinion. First is being selfish and jealous. They never want us to be more outstanding than them so they often try to hold us down instead of pushing us to move forward together. Besides, they manipulate our mind with negativity like telling bad things about an absent person with us. Second is being dishonest. They lie about their personal situations, create different stories from a true story and tell them to different people to cause misunderstanding with the purpose of their own sake. Third is being irresponsible. They will blame other people for their problems and make excuses when they fail instead of taking the responsibility to tackle the issue.

Why are classmates sometimes not real friendships?

Well, in class or workplace, friendships are founded based on collaboration and teamwork for a common objective, which is to pass the exam and gain high scores so the friendships are often pretty pragmatic and only serve individuals’ benefits. Somehow, all the students in a class seem to accept it because they see their class as a race in which they use grades as their racing horses and their co-operations as a trick to eliminate their opponents.
