Sample Answer

One of the most interesting older individuals I know is Mr. Nam, a retired teacher who lives in my neighborhood. He’s in his late 70s but remains remarkably active and engaged with the community. Having lived through significant historical and cultural changes in Vietnam, his life is filled with fascinating stories and valuable lessons.

Mr. Nam is known for his wisdom and calm demeanor, which naturally draws people to him when they need guidance. He has a deep understanding of life, shaped by decades of teaching and mentoring young minds. People admire his ability to look at situations from multiple perspectives and offer solutions that are both practical and empathetic.

He often gives advice about relationships, career decisions, and personal growth. For example, he emphasizes the importance of patience and kindness in resolving conflicts. For younger people, he encourages focusing on education and developing a strong sense of discipline. He also shares financial advice, advocating for saving and investing wisely based on lessons from his own experiences during times of scarcity.

I deeply admire Mr. Nam for his resilience and humility. Despite his accomplishments, he remains approachable and eager to share his knowledge. His stories about overcoming challenges during difficult times are inspiring and remind me of the value of perseverance. I feel fortunate to know someone like him, as his wisdom and warmth have had a positive impact on my life and on our community.

Follow Question Part 3

1. Why do you think older people are often considered wiser than younger people?

Older people are often considered wiser because they have accumulated a wealth of experience over their lifetime. They’ve faced various challenges and learned from their successes and failures, which gives them a broader perspective on life. Additionally, they’ve had more time to observe human behavior and understand patterns in relationships, work, and society. This makes their advice more grounded and practical compared to the theoretical knowledge younger people might have.

2. What role do older generations play in preserving culture and traditions?

Older generations are the custodians of culture and traditions. They pass down stories, values, and rituals that define a community’s identity. For example, they teach younger generations about festivals, traditional practices, and even native languages that might otherwise fade away. Their involvement ensures that these cultural elements are preserved and respected, fostering a sense of continuity and belonging among younger people.

3. How can younger people benefit from interacting with the elderly in their community?

Younger people can gain valuable insights and life lessons by interacting with the elderly. They can learn about history and traditions from firsthand accounts rather than books, gaining a deeper appreciation for their roots. Older people also provide emotional support and advice that can guide young people through difficult decisions. Additionally, these interactions can foster empathy and respect, bridging the gap between generations and creating a stronger community.

4. Do you think society values the contributions of older people as much as it should? Why or why not?

In many societies, the contributions of older people are undervalued, especially in fast-paced, technology-driven cultures that prioritize youth and innovation. However, their wisdom, experience, and ability to mentor are irreplaceable assets. Unfortunately, some older individuals face neglect or isolation, which reflects poorly on how society treats them. Valuing their contributions more could help build a more balanced and inclusive community where every generation learns from one another.
