IELTS Speaking Part 3: Topic Hobby

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

Here some examples of follow up questions that you may asked during your speaking part 3 by examiner related to cue card “Talk about your hobby”.

1. Do you think men and women tend to have different types of hobbies?

Yeah, there are some slight distinctions between men and women when it comes to their pastimes. I think for men, they tend to prefer physical activities such as hitting the gym or playing some sorts of sports. This makes their physical appearance look more attractive and appealing. In terms of women’s preferences, they might be into art or survival skills like culinary skills, painting or drawing.

2. Why do some people get obsessed with their hobby?

I would say that there are several reasons for this, but the biggest reason is that people tend to spend more time on activities which have positive impacts on their lives in the long term. For example, some people prefer getting up pretty early in the morning to do meditation or early pages. This is because such activities help them to fresh their mind, build up mental stamina and have control over their daily tasks.

3. Do you think it’s important for people to have hobbies? Why?

Absolutely. I believe that hobbies are an indispensable part of our lives. Just imagine that if your life was surrounded by work and study all the time, you might gradually feel burned out. You know, taking up a hobby can help you achieve a work-life balance, or at least make your life more joyful and meaningful as you can build rapport with those who share the same interests.

 4. Can hobbies have any negative effects?

Well, it depends on what kind of hobby you have. On the one hand, healthy hobbies like reading or playing sports are undoubtedly beneficial to your life because they can broaden your horizons and help you get lean or stay in a good shape. On the other hand, unhealthy hobbies like doom scrolling, I mean surfing the Internet for hours and eating fast food not only takes away time spent for other valuable activities, but also lead to diseases and mental problems such as obesity, distraction and procrastination.
