IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Topic: Talking with People

Topic: Talking with People

📝 Introduction

In IELTS Speaking Part 3, you will be asked broader and more abstract questions related to the topic in Part 2. These questions test your ability to express opinions, justify your answers, and discuss ideas in depth. Below are some example questions and band 8+ sample answers, along with useful vocabulary.

❓ Discussion Questions & Sample Answers

1. What communication skills are important when talking with others?
I think listening is the most essential skill. Many people focus too much on what they want to say and forget to actually listen. Apart from that, being clear and respectful while expressing your thoughts helps avoid misunderstandings and builds trust.

2. Do you think people today are better communicators than in the past?
In some ways, yes. Thanks to technology, people now communicate more frequently and instantly. However, I think face-to-face communication skills have declined. Many people are more comfortable texting than speaking in person, which can weaken their social skills over time.

3. Is it easier to talk to friends or strangers?
It’s definitely easier to talk to friends because there’s already a level of trust and familiarity. Talking to strangers can be awkward at first, especially if there’s a lack of common ground or if you’re shy. That said, some people are naturally good at small talk and can engage with anyone.

4. Why do some people enjoy talking while others prefer to stay quiet?
It often depends on personality. Extroverts tend to enjoy social interaction and feel energized by conversations, while introverts may find it draining and prefer to observe or reflect. Cultural and upbringing factors also play a role in how people express themselves.
