Some people think that charity organizations should only offer help to people of their own country. But others believe that these organizations should give aid to people in great need wherever they live.

There have been contradictory views as to who should receive support from charitable organizations: citizens of their own nation or needy individuals regardless of their territory. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and provide my own perspective on it.
On the one hand, it is emphasized that accommodating domestic needs should be prioritized by philanthropic organizations. Proponents of this view believe that it would be pointless to be concerned for needy people elsewhere while neglecting one’s very next-door neighbor, who might also be in great demand for assistance. Furthermore, helping those within one’s country seems more practical since it is often easier to find out what specific aid is needed when there is some cultural and socioeconomic common ground between the giver and the recipient.
On the other hand, it is argued that concentrating solely on domestic demands seems to derive from a nationalistic rationale. Those who espouse this notion doubt whether there might be excessive attention given to underprivileged individuals within a certain country while insufficient support is being offered to people living in the famine-affected regions of Africa, for instance. Likewise, there should be no reason for delaying aid to victims in territories struck by natural disasters like the recent earthquake sufferers in Turkey and Syria.
In conclusion, although it seems difficult for these two groups to achieve some consensus, I tend to agree that charitable activities should reach out to people in need globally as well. From my perspective, the heart of philanthropy is to cater for all those in demand; hence, it is questionable why this should be territory-bound.
