IELTS Speaking Part 1 : Topic Art

I. Common questions on this topic:

  • Do you prefer modern art or traditional art? Why?
  • Do you often visit art galleries? Why or why not?
  • Would you like to become an artist in the future?
  • Do you think learning art is important?

II. Sample Answers

Q1. Do you prefer modern art or traditional art? Why?

If you prefer modern art:
“Personally, I find modern art really thought-provoking. I love how bold and creative it is — sometimes a single painting can speak to me in ways I didn’t expect. Even if I don’t always understand it, I enjoy the freedom and imagination behind it.”

If you prefer traditional art:
“I actually prefer traditional art because it feels more meaningful to me. The details, the stories behind each painting — it’s like a window into history. There’s something timeless about it that always gives me a sense of peace.”

Q2. Do you often visit art galleries? Why or why not?

If yes:
“Yes, I go whenever I get the chance, especially when I travel. Art galleries give me a sense of calm, and sometimes I discover artists whose work really speaks to me. It’s also a great way to appreciate creativity and relax at the same time.”

If no:
“Not really. I don’t visit galleries that often because I’m usually too busy. But I still enjoy looking at art online. Maybe in the future, when I have more free time, I’ll explore more in person.”

Q3. Would you like to become an artist in the future?

If yes:
“I think it would be amazing! Being a professional artist means you get to express yourself through your work every day. It’s not an easy path, but I’d love to keep art as a serious hobby, and who knows — maybe I’ll do freelance art someday.”

If no:
“Honestly, I don’t see myself becoming a full-time artist. I enjoy art as a hobby, but I don’t think I’d want to turn it into a career. It’s something I do to relax and organize my thoughts, not for money or fame.”

Q4. Do you think learning art is important?

If yes:
“Definitely. Art helps develop creativity and emotional expression, especially for young children. It teaches patience and focus too — skills that are often overlooked in schools. I think it should be a regular part of the school curriculum.”

If no:
“I think it depends on the person. Not everyone is into art, and that’s okay. While it can be beneficial, I don’t think it should be mandatory. People should have the freedom to choose what inspires them.”
