IELTS Speaking Part 3: Answer Test 1 (C.19)

In this post, we would like to put an emphasis on IELTS Speaking Part 3 topic School rules and Working in the legal profession from C.19 test 1 .

I. School rules

1. What kinds of rules are common in a school?

In schools, rules span various aspects such as behavior, dress code, attendance, and academic integrity. These rules foster a disciplined environment where students learn to respect authority, interact respectfully with peers, and prioritize safety. For instance, rules prohibiting running in hallways ensure everyone’s safety, while guidelines on academic honesty promote fairness and integrity among students.

2. How important is it to have rules in a school?

Rules play a crucial role in maintaining order and creating a conducive learning atmosphere. They not only establish boundaries but also teach students valuable life skills such as responsibility and accountability. By consistently enforcing rules, schools promote a fair environment where everyone has equal opportunities to learn and grow. Moreover, rules contribute to a sense of community and mutual respect among students and teachers alike.

3. What do you recommend should happen if children break school rules?

When students break school rules, it’s essential to respond appropriately to reinforce the importance of adhering to guidelines. Minor infractions might warrant warnings or counseling sessions to help students understand the consequences of their actions. For more serious offenses, involving parents and implementing disciplinary measures like detention or community service can be effective. The goal should be not only to enforce consequences but also to guide students towards learning from their mistakes and making positive behavioral choices in the future.

II. Working in the legal profession

1.Can you suggest why many students decide to study law at university?

The decision to study law often stems from a desire to pursue a career that is intellectually stimulating and socially impactful. Law offers the opportunity to engage in critical thinking, problem-solving, and advocacy for justice. Many are drawn to the prospect of influencing legal frameworks, defending rights, and contributing to societal change. Moreover, a legal education opens doors to diverse career paths in areas such as corporate law, public policy, or international relations, making it a versatile and respected field of study.

2. What are the key personal qualities needed to be a successful lawyer?

Successful lawyers possess a combination of skills and attributes essential for navigating the complexities of legal practice. Firstly, strong analytical abilities enable lawyers to dissect legal issues, assess evidence, and formulate effective strategies. Additionally, excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—are crucial for articulating arguments persuasively and negotiating agreements. Integrity and ethical judgment are paramount in upholding the law and maintaining trust with clients and colleagues. Lastly, resilience and the ability to manage stress are vital given the demanding nature of legal work, ensuring lawyers can thrive in challenging situations and maintain professional effectiveness.

3. Do you agree that working in the legal profession is very stressful?

Indeed, the legal profession is renowned for its high-stress environment and demanding workload. Lawyers often face tight deadlines, contentious cases, and the responsibility of making decisions with significant implications. The pressure to deliver results for clients while upholding ethical standards can contribute to stress levels. However, effective stress management techniques, support systems within legal firms, and a commitment to work-life balance can mitigate these challenges. Despite its challenges, many find the legal profession rewarding due to its intellectual rigor, opportunity to effect change, and the fulfillment of advocating for justice.
