1. Why do you think people in the 21st century feel more stressed than in the past?

I believe the heightened stress levels of the modern era are primarily a byproduct of the digital revolution. Unlike previous generations, we are now living in a state of constant connectivity, which has eroded the boundaries between work and personal life.  For instance, the expectation to respond to emails instantly, even outside of working hours, creates a state of perpetual alertness that our ancestors never experienced. Therefore, while technology has increased productivity, it has simultaneously introduced a new, insidious form of chronic stress.

2. Should employers take more responsibility for their employees’ mental health?

I wholeheartedly agree that corporate responsibility should extend into the psychological sphere. A workforce that is mentally overwhelmed is ultimately less productive and more prone to absenteeism. Many forward-thinking companies have already begun implementing wellness programs and mental health days, which have shown to significantly improve employee retention and overall morale. Ultimately, fostering a healthy work environment is not just an ethical imperative; it is a sound economic strategy for any sustainable business.

3. How can technology be used to help people reduce stress?

While technology is often the source of stress, it can also be a formidable tool for its mitigation. The same digital platforms that overwhelm us can also host mindfulness applications and data-tracking tools that help individuals monitor their physical and mental states. Wearable devices that track heart-rate variability can alert users when they are reaching a state of high stress, prompting them to take a necessary hiatus or engage in deep-breathing exercises. Thus, the key lies in our digital literacy and the intentional use of technology to support, rather than subvert, our well-being.
