Model Answer

The given pie chart depicts the average commuting time for UK laborers in 2009, while the line graph illustrates six means of transportation used to reach work in the same year.

Overall, a significant percentage of workers (42%) took 15 minutes or less to commute. In addition, automobiles were the most popular mode of transport, while bicycles were the least popular in London, and the underground was less favored by workers in other areas of the UK.

As can be seen from the pie chart, 42% of UK workers commuted for 15 minutes or less, while only a minority spent more than 1 hour commuting. Besides, commuting time of 16 minutes to half an hour was typical for one-third of workers, which is three times and four times longer than the proportion of those who traveled for 31-45 minutes and 45-60 minutes, respectively.

What stands out from the line graph is that approximately 40% of London laborers and three-quarters of workers in the rest of the UK drove cars to their workplaces, making it the most used method of transportation. Conversely, bicycles were the least popular in London (5%), while the underground was least favored in other areas (1%). In addition to automobiles, London workers favored trains and the underground (about 20%), whereas laborers in other regions preferred walking or taking buses (around 10%).
