IELTS Writing Task 2: Family ( Causes and effects Essay)

In some countries around the world men and women are having children late in life. What are the reasons for this development?

What are the effects on society and family life?

Sample Answer:

Adults nowadays, regardless of genders, have a tendency not to give birth when they are still young. This is attributable to their desire to pursue further education and career success, and I believe this development has detrimental effects on both society and family life.

To many people, further education and career success are bigger priorities than having a child. Some of them are aware that studying when they are still young is much easier than at their older age when their memory and cognitive abilities are affected by the aging process. They try to study as long as they can by enrolling in other study programs after leaving their school, such as postgraduate study courses or language classes, so they hardly have time for any birth plans. Besides, as youth is a good period of time for trial and error, many young people decide to work around the clock, take on new positions or even change jobs to accumulate work experience and climb their career path. Therefore, they may be too busy to be pregnant, not to mention taking care of their child after birth.

However, such late parenthood may bring about many undesirable consequences for not only society but also families. In social aspects, the country whose residents delay producing offspring is likely to face an aging population in future as fewer babies are born every year. This can be followed by a shortage of workforce in the long run when most workers are the elderly who can hardly do physically-demanding jobs such as construction site workers. As for families, childless couples do not have as great motivation to stay in marriage as those with a baby. The fear of their kid being reared in a dysfunctional family may prevent parents from getting divorced, but without one, it is easier for them to leave and give up on their marriage.

In conclusion, many youngsters these days do not prioritize having babies early because they are more into studying and working, yet such a tendency does great harm to society in general and each family in particular.
