The graphics illustrate how the movie rights of Marvel superhero characters changed from 2014 to 2017, associated with the revenue made from the top 5 franchises.

Over this 4-year period, Spider-Man was constantly the best-selling character, which was followed by X-Men Avengers exceeded Iron Man in 2017 to take the third place Fantastic Four fell out of the top five, and its place was taken by Captain American.

Ever since Marvel studio’s efforts in getting back the rights of its characters that were sold to different movie companies in the 1990s, a large number of superheroes had been taken back by 2014. However, the most-profitable character, Spider-Man, was still solely owned by Sony Pictures along with its main foe, Venom Likewise, the ownership of the other two top-five franchises, namely X-men and Fantastic Four, has not been bought back from 20th Century Fox, which possessed the second most characters in 2014. It shared Quicksilver and Red Scarlet with Marvel, though. Namor was another co-owned character between Marvel and Universal Pictures, while Lionsgate Entertainment had the full right of Man-thing.

By 2017, Marvel had successfully regained the rights of all top-five franchises along with much more main characters. They included all those once belonging to 20th Century Fox and Spider-Man, whose right was shared with Sony Pictures Even so, Venom, as well as some 14 other characters, still belonged to Sony Pictures only. Universal Pictures was another company that co-owned some characters, such as Huth and Namor, with Marvel but had the entire ownership of She-Hulk.

Overall, thanks to Stan Lee’s endeavor, Marvel Studio had got bath the movie rights of the majority of its characters, including all the top-five franchises.
