Talk about a football team you like

Talk about a football team you like – IELTS Speaking topic belongs to Sport topic, one of the very familiar topics, appearing often in the real Speaking test in recent years.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Talk about a football team you like

1. Do you like football?

Yes, football is among my most favourite sports. I first watched football when I was a very young kid and got hooked on it almost immediately. Now I’m a fan of both international football and the local version, whenever my hometown’s team plays.

2. Have you ever played in any football match?

I’ve played football before, but only casually with my schoolmates. We used to stay after school was over for a quick match. I had a lot of male friends so we had no trouble finding enough people for a team. I don’t intend to be a professional footballer though, as it looks really hard.

3. Is football popular in your country?

Of course, it’s even extremely common for football to be a topic of conversation here. There’s no shortage of people who are more enthusiastic about it than I am. Back when the TV wasn’t present in every household, neighbors would gather at someone’s house to watch football when it came on.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 : Talk about a football team you like

  • What happened
  • Who the winner was

And why you were interested in it.

Sample Answer

The football match that I consider indelible is actually one that I didn’t play in. During a local tournament which took place in my senior year at high school, my school’s team made it all the way to the semifinal. We faced another school at a stadium in the city’s outskirts to determine who would play in the final. That year, our team garnered considerable attention, because we’d never been regarded as championship material, but there we were, competing for a spot in the last match.

I was a member of my school’s football team and originally set to appear in the startling lineup. However, my hopes were dashed when I sprained my ankle a day before the match, which resulted in me being unable to play. The injury relegated me to watching from the sidelines, and I could recall feeling extremely disappointed at the circumstances.

My negativity eventually subsided when the referee blew the final whistle, as my team edged out our opponent with a two-to-one victory. The atmosphere was electric on our side, and our fans were so ecstatic at the result that they ran into the field to hug my teammates. The moment was truly worth celebrating for it meant we’d reached that tournament’s final for the first time in our school’s history.

Despite my setback, I was delighted as if I personally participated in the match. It was a bittersweet victory, but looking back at it now, I’m no longer bitter about this beautiful memory.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Talk about a football team you like

1. What are the advantages of playing football?

There are a couple of positives of playing football that I can think of. Running around on the pitch is a helpful workout for the legs. After doing so for a while, you’ll notice that you’ve developed your leg strength. Furthermore, football is also a good way to socialize with the players around yourself and foster brotherhood. Personally, I feel as though I’ve been able to bond with my teammates very well after each match.

2. Do you think that international football tournaments should be maintained?

Yes, of course, mainly because they’re such huge sources of income for the organizers and advertisers. These events also provide employment opportunities for those who work in catering and hospitality, since those people would be able to provide services to an influx of foreign visitors. International football tournaments also produce great entertainment on TV for people around the world. It’s estimated that billions of people tune in to watch the World Cup, which is the largest football competition globally.

3. What’s the best way to become a top football player?

I think the best way is starting with working extremely diligently. All top football players are incredibly strong, and you can’t become so without dedicating tens of thousands of hours of your life to it. While training, you would also have to focus on being the best, but doing so requires you to give up a lot of hobbies and pleasures in life, so that you wouldn’t be distracted from the goal. In short, if you are willing to devote your life to the game, I believe you’ll be able to earn a place among the cream of the crop.
