Sample Essay:

The two pie charts illustrate the breakdown of energy production sources in France in 1995 and 2005. Overall, while nuclear power experienced the most substantial increase in its share, the proportion of petroleum declined markedly. Additionally, gas and coal remained the dominant energy sources throughout the period.

In 1995, coal and gas each contributed approximately 29% to the total energy output, with figures of 29.80% and 29.63%, respectively. The share of petroleum was only slightly lower, at 29.27%, making it almost on par with the other two. By contrast, nuclear energy accounted for just 6.40%, rendering it the least significant source of power at that time. The category of ‘Other’ sources comprised the smallest proportion, at 4.90%.

By 2005, the share of nuclear power had risen by 3.7 percentage points to 10.10%, although it still represented the smallest fraction overall. In contrast, the proportion of petroleum dropped significantly to 19.55%, making it only about twice as much as nuclear energy. Meanwhile, the figures for coal and gas remained relatively stable, edging up slightly to 30.93% and 30.31%, respectively. The contribution of ‘Other’ sources also increased notably, accounting for 9.10% of total energy production in France in 2005.
