Describe a rule that you don’t like

Rules and Regulation” is one of the common topics of IELTS Speaking. However, many candidates still have difficulty in solving problems on this topic.

Describe a rule that you don’t like

You should say:
– What it is?
– Why don’t you like it?
– How do others feel about the rule?
– And explain whether you’ve followed the rule?

Sample Answer

I would take this opportunity to tell you about an upsetting regulation that I encountered recently.

It is a rule for my company’s employees on punctuality and working hours that has just been imposed for more than a week. Previously, we are allowed to show up at work no later than 9.15 am with an unlimited number of times, as long as our 8 working hours are ensured. However, just 1 week ago, the executive board decided to adjust the policy to only 3 times of late attendance monthly, and we all must have a report with legit evidence to get approved for our late comings, or we’ll get a salary deduction.

That is a such an unreasonable change to me and my colleagues too, because 15 minutes is just a rational amount of time for us to make up for some unexpected daily issues, and most importantly, we still fully complete our 8 working hours by coming home 15 minutes later. Instead, now we are only able to do so 3 times a month, and we even have to submit a proof for that. What should I submit if my dog is uneasy, or my bus is late for 3 minutes? Ridiculous.

Moreover, things are even worse for myself, as I have to catch a bus to work. Normally I take the 8.30 bus and it fits me perfect to arrive at work at around 9.10. But now that the eligible time has changed, I have to go by the earlier bus which picks up at 8, which means I even have to wake up by 7. This new routine has made me exhausted everyday for a week now because I am too sleepy every morning. It even turns my life upside down because I could not even wake up at the right time in the morning and my battery goes out too early each night due to sleepiness.

And as far as I know, many of my colleagues have to suffer from similar problems. Therefore, we are discussing to make a complaint to our manager and try to compromise with the executive board about our working hours. I really hope our efforts would work and things will look up, or maybe I will have to think of a job quit.
