Sample Answer : Band 7.0

With access to a wide range of new and innovative technologies, children have changed the way they spend their freetime. While there are several potential disadvantages to this trend, I believe they are overshadowed by the benefits that technology offers young people.

Firstly, there are several potential disadvantages that could pose a risk to the physical and mental health of children that get too much screen time or use modern technology irresponsibly. Studies have shown that children who spend too much time playing computer games, watching TV, and using the internet spend less time playing sports or doing outdoor activities and are therefore at a higher risk of suffering from obesity, sleep disorders, and physical development issues. Overexposure to such technologies can also impact a child’s mental health in the form of impaired cognitive development and academic performance, behavioural issues, anxiety, hyperactivity, and poor social skills. That being said, such risks can be mitigated through parental intervention and supervision.

On the other hand, one of the biggest advantages of modern technologies is their ability to promote learning and skills development, particularly amongst children. There is a vast array of educational apps and games that can help children to learn mathematics, science, and language skills in a simple, fun, and engaging manner, without having to be in a classroom with a teacher. Similarly, video games have the potential to teach children problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and hand-eye coordination. Furthermore, technologies such as social media, messaging apps, and video chat programs have made it easier for children to stay connected with their family and friends, even if they are physically distant.

In conclusion, while certain technologies are associated with a number of potential disadvantages for children, the negative impacts can be avoided through effective parental control regarding the amount of time that children spend using such technologies and the type of content that they view.
