Writing Task 2: Children – Overweight problem

In many countries, children are becoming overweight and unhealthy. Some people think that the government has the responsibility to solve this problem.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

More and more children across the world suffer from obesity and other health issues these days. While it would be natural to assume that it is the government’s responsibility to address this problem, I would argue that parents and relatives should be an equal part of the solution.

Admittedly, the role of the government in alleviating common health problems such as overweightness among children is indispensable. Resources available at government’s disposal like authority and public funds make it feasible to adopt a large-scale solution. That is, healthy food mandates and compulsory physical training sessions could be imposed at schools nationwide with the help of taxpayer money and government leadership. This could prove a more effective remedy to the situation than allowing the public make their own choices, seeing as disposable income and self-discipline most individuals possess are hardly sufficient to prioritize a healthy lifestyle for their children.

That said, caregivers such as parents and relatives play no less important role in raising fit and healthy children. This is simply because immediate family members tend to have more control over a child’s diet and lifestyle choices – the quality and quantity of food the child consumes and how his/her free time is spent during the day. In this sense, it would be sensible to expect more action from family members who are involved in a child’s life. Parents should also lead by example by attending sports events and activities with their children rather than merely encourage them do it. This would not only ensure children undertake an adequate amount of exercise, but also allow parents time necessary for bonding.

In conclusion, the government plays a critical role in mitigating the issues of obesity and poor health among children, but family involvement is equally essential.
