IELTS Speaking Part 1: Neighbours

Here are the sample questions and answers Part 1 on the topic “Neighbours”.

1. Do you know your neighbors?

If you know your neighbors well…

“Yeah, I know my neighbors pretty well. We often run into each other and have a quick chat. It’s nice to have familiar faces around, especially when you need a hand with something small.”

If you don’t know them well…

“Not really, I don’t know my neighbors very well. We might nod or say hi in passing, but that’s about it. Everyone seems to keep to themselves, which is fine by me.”

2. What do you think of your neighbors?

If you have a positive view…

“My neighbors are great. They’re friendly and considerate, always quiet at night and we sometimes help each other out with things like collecting mail when someone’s away. It’s a really nice community vibe.”

If your experience is neutral or negative…

“Well, I don’t really know them well enough to have a strong opinion, but they seem okay. There hasn’t been any trouble, but we don’t really interact much either. It’s pretty neutral, just typical city living, I guess.”

3. How do you get along well with your neighbors?

If you get along well…

“I get along well with my neighbors by just being friendly and respectful. We always greet each other and share little updates about our lives. During holidays, we even exchange small gifts or cards. It’s these little things that make a good neighborhood relationship.”

If getting along is a challenge…

“To be honest, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Sometimes we have small issues, like noise or parking, but we try to talk it out and keep things civil. It’s all about giving and taking a bit, and trying to respect each other’s space.”

4. Do you think it’s important to have a good relationship with one’s neighbors?

If you value good relationships with neighbors…

“Definitely, I think it’s really important to have a good relationship with your neighbors. It just makes everyday life smoother and more pleasant. You know you have someone nearby to rely on in case of emergencies, and it feels more secure.”

If you think it’s not as important…

“I guess it’s nice to have a good relationship with your neighbors, but I don’t think it’s essential. As long as everyone is respectful and minds their own business, that’s enough for me. It’s more about personal space and peace at home.”
